Our Church Leadership
Our Church thrives because of the energy and style of the people who are a part of our leadership. Here are a few of the people that make our church community special:
Rev. Lourey Savick
(508) 529-3192, Option 2
With her larger than life smile, her warm and engaging voice, and wearing her favorite red cowboy boots, Reverend Lourey Savick, the new Pastor at United Parish of Upton, has that special persona that's certain to make everyone feel welcome.
Pastor Lourey began at United Parish on July 10 and since that time has been happily becoming familiar with her new community of parishioners. She grew up in Minnesota attending a very large, very diverse high school where she said she, "struggled to find my stride." However, it was when she would attend weekly worship services with her family that she really discovered who she was. "I really felt that church was a place where you could be free; where you could be your true self," she explained.
And it was while attending Wartburg College in Iowa that she realized her calling was the ministry saying, “I felt drawn to history, music, theater but I also felt that I’d been given this gift and God was calling me to do something with it.” She graduated from Wartburg with a Bachelor’s Degree in Religion and a minor in Theater. She also holds a Masters Degree in Divinity from Boston University School of Theology. Prior to United Parish, she served as Pastor to Peterborough United Methodist Church in New Hampshire.
These days, more and more churches are seeing a decrease in attendance from busy families. When asked if she has a specific goal to try and increase attendance at United Parish, Pastor Lourey answers candidly. “No, I don’t,” she said, feeling those in attendance are making it a priority to be there. “I feel everyone who comes to worship is here because they want to be.” She says the same thing about performing marriages, “There are so many other options for couples besides marrying in a church, so when they come to me I do my happy dance!”
Speaking of performing marriages, United Parish is proud to be an open and affirming/reconciling congregation—meaning they embrace individuals of all ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, and family structure. “We welcome everyone; it goes without saying,” said Pastor Lourey.
In the future, the United Methodist Provisional Elder said she hopes to introduce some new ideas and programs to her new Parish, but for now she’s eagerly absorbing all that is new around her.
Pastor Lourey and her husband Wesley live in Jamaica Plain where Wes is a Professor of Theater at Suffolk University.
