United Parish of Upton FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What kind of a Church is the United Parish?

Often, new members want to know exactly what kind of ‘church’ they are joining.  The United Parish of Upton is actually what is called a ‘federated’ church, that is, it is a worshipping community comprised of members from more than one denomination.  In our case, the Untied Parish ‘unites’ The First Congregational Church of Upton (United Church of Christ) and the Upton United Methodist Church (United Methodist).

Does it make a difference which one I join, or do I join the United Parish?

Yes.  Officially when you join The United Parish of Upton, you join one of our two denominations.  In other words, you will join either as a member of The United Church of Christ, or as a member of the United Methodist Church.  This choice is yours, and information can be obtained from the pastor concerning this matter.  This is necessary because our two denominations need accurate counts of members in every local church.  It should be added, however, that we are one  church, and one body in Christ.  You will find that the matter of denominational affiliation is not emphasized either in worship or in fellowship.  We always seek to provide our members with information about both denominations, but we are very much a ‘united’ parish.

How did this ‘united’ parish come about?

During January of 1970, The First Congregational Church and The Methodist Church held meetings to ratify formation of the United Parish.  The first meeting of The United Parish was called to order at 7:30 P.M. on February 24, 1970.  The new organization required much hard work, but in time officers were elected and committees established.  For a time, The United Parish operated with two pastors, one from each denomination.  Today, only one pastor serves the church, with denominational affiliation being alternated.  Further information can be obtained from the church Historian.

Do I have a voice in the affairs of the United Parish?

Yes, you do.  Each member has a voice!  Once a year on the fourth Thursday in January, the Annual Meeting of The United Parish is held at the church.  This meeting is of great importance, since members vote on matters pertaining to the running of the church for the coming year (salaries, budget, committee membership, etc.) and hear reports of all committees and the pastor for the previous year.  It is an excellent opportunity for you to get involved in the affairs of the church and a key privilege of being a member.

Am I eligible to serve on committees now?

Yes. We encourage you to find an area of service that best suits you.  Any member may serve on the committees of the church.  If you have a particular area of interest, please contact the church office, or a member of the Nominating Committee. Also, review the description of the United Parish committees and commissions contained in your new member packet.

How can I get my children ‘settled’ in The United Parish?

Many parents with children have a legitimate concern about programs and services available for their children.  The United Parish offers an excellent Christian Education program for children of all ages.  Nursery care is offered for infants, and a toddler class is available for the very young child.  The regular Sunday School program is held during the morning worship service and a youth program is held Sunday evenings for junior and senior high young people.  You may contact the Sunday School Superintendent, whose name is listed on the church bulletin or call the church office (529-3192) for more information.
